Today, oranges rank just behind apples as the most consumed fruit in the world. Most oranges in Iran are grown in Mazandaran and Kerman; in general, citrus cultivation areas in Iran are summarized into two geographical regions:
North and coasts of the Caspian Sea. South such as Kerman, Bam, Jiroft, Hormozgan, Khuzestan and Fars. Iran accounts for 2,308,730(Tons) global orange production, ranking it the ninth largest producer and seventh-largest exporter. Oranges make up 50% of total citrus fruit production. This round fruit is the definition of the color orange. It is highly nutritional and very appealing. Oranges are intolerant to temperatures below -2o C. Frost damage on the fruit depends on the duration.

This is a Navel type orange originating from California. The tree is sturdy and vigorous. It is a high yield cultivar which matures two weeks before Washington. The fruit is smaller, more oval in shape and slightly lower in quality compared to Washington Navel. Navel has a sugar content of 11.2%, acidity of 0.89% and sugar/acid ratio of 12.6. It is one of the earliest maturing cultivars in the obovoid orange group.

Valencia was first introduced in Iran from Italy in 1945. The rind is yellow, slightly pebbly and moderately adhered to the flesh. The skin around the segments is usually relatively thick. Valencia is good for transport and storage. This variety is suitable for fresh consumption and for industrial production. Valencia is slightly oval and almost seedless. This is a late maturing variety which is harvested in March and April. The fruit keeps well on the tree for a long time. Valencia is the most resilient to high temperatures.
